Generosity Brings Stability After the Storm

Disaster Assistance is a core part of the Mutual Assistance mission. In fact, CGMA is often comes to mind when a hurricane hits or wildfires spread. And rightly so! Mutual Assistance has served affected CG families with more than $5.6 million with Disaster Response over the last 3 years.

PO1 Deborah Schneller shares how one very practical part of our disaster response—food loss grants—made a difference in her life when she was a young non-rate stationed along the Gulf.

“After Hurricane Katrina, my landlord refused to replace my refrigerator. CGMA provided the funds to take care of that expense and help me back on my feet. That’s the biggest thing about Coast Guard Mutual Assistance—we like taking care of our people!”

A gift of this sort speaks volumes to those that have just lost so much.

Recovery takes time and getting food back in the refrigerator can return a sense of normalcy after a disruptive storm. In fact, Mutual Assistance gave over 700 food loss grants to support shipmates as they recovered from Hurricane IDA in 2021. These grants supported Coast Guard families with over $515,000 for the cost of replacing food lost during power outages. As you know, prices for staples like milk, meat, and eggs have dramatically jumped this year. A gift left in your will or estate plan can help CGMA assist other Coast Guard members like PO1 Schneller in times of need. To learn more, please contact us today.
