Bringing Peace and Relief to a 90-Year-Old Coast Guard Widow

Today Mrs. Hardin is smiling.

Mary Hardin

Mary Hardin is petite and precious. At a full 90 years old and less than 5 feet tall, she is the widow of a long-retired Coast Guard member. Recovering from a recent fall, Mary was worried about how she would pay her medical bill and take care of pressing home repairs. Her worries began to shrink once she was surrounded by the help of CGMA and the care of shipmates.

CGMA Representative at SFO Galveston, YNCS Shane Wetterstrom, took special interest in Mrs. Hardin's situation and organized a volunteer day to give her the extra support she needed around her home. Within a week, crew members showed up at her small ranch-style home and attended to some of her yard and home maintenance needs: fixing several out-of-reach vents, organizing her husband’s military uniforms, and pulling weeds. After mulching and sweeping the driveway, the crew personally presented her with a CGMA grant for her bills.

In response to their efforts, CGMA COO Sean Fennell commended the crew, “Thank you for taking care of Mrs. Hardin. We have a special place for the widows that we support, and we are glad you were able to assist her.”

With her roof repaired and electrical issues resolved Mrs. Hardin is content. When Mary needed help, a CGMA grant was delivered right on time with the personal touch of an attentive crew. A gift left in your will or estate plan can help CGMA assist other Coast Guard members and their families, like Mrs. Hardin, in times of need.
